Tom Dresser received his Victoria Cross (abbreviated as VC) for gallantry in 1917 when he was 24 years old. The Victoria Cross is the most prestigious gallantry award conferred upon a member of the armed forces of the United Kingdom or any country that was a colony of the British.

All former colonies of the United Kingdom are now members of the Commonwealth. Dresser, an English national, was born on July 21, 1892 and died on April 9, 1982. At 24, he was a private in the 7th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment (Alexandra, Princess of Wales' Own) in the British army. He was awarded the VC for his gallantry during the First World War. On 12 May, 1917, Private Dresser was injured and wounded twice on the way. Suffering great pain and exhaustion, he successfully conveyed a message from the battalion's headquarters to the frontline trenches. This act of selfless service to the battalion, fearlessness and determination to succeed despite all odds took place in Roeux, France and proved to be invaluable at a critical time. His VC is now proudly displayed at the Green Howards Museum in Richmond, Yorkshire, England. He is related to John Dresser of Tuggerah.
