William III of England was also known as William II of Scotland and William III of Orange. He was a Dutch aristocrat. He was born in The Hague, the capital of the Netherlands (or Holland), on November 14, 1650. He was a member of the House of Orange-Nassau. Born a Protestant Prince of Orange, William III was crowned Stadtholder of the United Netherlands on June 28, 1672, the King of England and Ireland from February 13, 1689 and the King of Scotland from April 11, 1689. He ruled over all these kingdoms until his death in 1702.

William III was known as William III in all his realms except Scotland, where he was known as William II. He won the three crowns of England, Scotland and Ireland following the Glorious Revolution of 1688 in which his uncle and father-in-law, James II of England (also known as James VII of Scotland), who fled the country and was believed to have abdicated, was deposed. William III was married to his cousin Mary II, the daughter of James II. For the first five years of his reign over England, Scotland and Ireland, he and Mary II were joint rulers. William III died on March 8, 1702 at Westminster Abbey in England.
