France has a very diverse climate, as it occupies a large area, and has mountains, beaches and flat plains. The north and northwest of the country generally have a temperate climate, In the south-east, the climate is more Mediterranean. In the west, the climate is oceanic with high levels of rainfall, mild winters and cool summers. The climate is more continental inland, with hot stormy summers, colder winters and less rain. The climate in the Alps, and other mountainous regions, is mainly alpine.

The vegetation in France was all woodlands before the Neolithic period, principally beeches and oaks covered the whole country in France except for the temperate mountain forests composed of firs and pica's, and Mediterranean forests of pines and oaks in the southeast.
