If You Are Married In Another Country, Is It Legal In The USA?

In 2002 while visiting some friends in Guyana South America, I married a local girl. When I returned to the US, I applied for her visa. It was just recently denied. I need to know if I am legally married in the US? If I was to marry someone else in the US, would i need a divorce first? Or was the marriage never recognized or legal in the USA? Please help me so that I can figure out what to do and how to do it!

Yes as long as you weren't born in that country and you have a passport showing that you were there legally
