Pathos is a term which is used to indicate the appeal made to emotion. It is explained as a quality or capability to arouse emotions in people. It is also described as a mode of persuasion and is explained in detail by the Greek philosopher Aristotle. It is one of the three modes of persuasion with the other two being ethos and logos. Pathos is a word derived from the Greek term paschein which means "to suffer" when translated into English literally.

It also indicates passion in certain instances. Pathos is something that is used in large quantities in art and literature and continues to be used even today. Tragic situations or portrayals convey more pathos than any other situations because tragic situations are often very sentimental. The words like empathy and sympathy have a deep relation to the term pathos.
