Frank Zappa's debut album with Mothers of Invention, 'Freak Out' in 1966, revealed Zappa's passion serious music and pop along with his scathing wit. Subsequent releases were an extension of those musical and lyrical themes. 'Absolutely Free' was released in May 1967. 1968 saw the release of three albums; 'We're only in it for the Money' which ridiculed the hippies and parodied the Beatles' Sgt.
Pepper album 'Lumpy Gravy' which was a solo album that he recorded with an orchestra; and 'Cruising With Ruben & the Jets', which saw the Mothers playing neo-doo wop.
By the late '60s, Zappa expanded the Mothers lineup, and turned increasingly towards instrumental jazz-rock. A lot of this work displayed his prowess at guitar playing. But he had disbanded by the end of the decade. 'Uncle Meat' and 'Hot Rats' were both released in 1969.
