What Does 'Philemon' Mean?

    Philemon is the name of a Biblical character. He is mentioned in the New Testament. He is supposed to be the recipient of a private letter from Paul of Tarsus. Paul along with Simon is one of the most notable of Christian missionaries. Philemon was an inhabitant of Colossae in Phrygia. Phrygia was a kingdom in ancient Greece. This letter that Philemon received is known as the Epistle of Philemon.

    Philemon was the owner of the slave Onesimus who ran away in order to meet Saint Paul. In the letter sent to Philemon Saint Paul asks him to forgive the slave for his act. This letter is now a book in the New Testament of the bible and is considered as one of the most noteworthy of Saint Paul's works.
