The Sex Pistols got together in 1975 with the founding members being Johnny Rotten as the lead singer, Paul Cook as the drummer, Glen Matlock as the bassist and Steve Jones as the guitarist; Sid Vicious later replaced Matlock as the group's bassist.
The group's manager was Malcolm McLaren who had earlier managed groups like the New York Dolls and The Strand which featured Jones and Cook in the line up. McLaren along with his partner Vivienne Westwood owned a clothes shop that designed clothes for theater and cinema acts; it was here that a number of upcoming musicians who were to later be a part of the first generation of the punk rock scene in the mid and late seventies used to hang out.
The cast of Sex Pistols too was drawn up by McLaren from the artists that frequented his shop. The band first played under the name The Swankers with their first gig being played at a café in London in 1974. The Sex Pistols made their first appearance in public on November 6, 1975 at St. Martin's College.
