The traditional Indian greeting is standing with your hands folded. This form of greeting is known in Hindi, the national language of India, as Namaste. Men may shake hands with other men, and women may do so with other women, but owing to the religious beliefs, which are strictly followed in India, a man or a woman generally do not shake hands with a member of the opposite sex.
The social etiquette and customs associated with meeting and greeting a person in India depend heavily upon the religious beliefs of the individuals, their level of education and their caste or class, and the position of this caste or class in the social hierarchy.
The hierarchy and position in society is of utmost importance in India, so every person must greet the seniormost (be it age-wise or position-wise) person first. Even while leaving a room, it is important to bid farewell to every person individually, starting with the senior most person and going in the descending order of seniority.
