Will be several months before I purchase a fram for my bed but, I don't want to cause damage to my carpet by leaving bed on it.

If you can, put a sheet under your boxspring, then in about a month, take that sheet out, and put a new one under it, that would ensure that you are keeping the area clean, and you might want to put down some baking powder and let it set for about 20 minutes and then vacuum it up before laying down the new sheet.
