A Modder Rhu is the Irish Gaelic name for the Irish or Red Setter. Interestingly, the Irish Setter was once known as the Red Spaniel.

As the national Setter of Ireland, the Irish Setter has a love of sport that flows from its age old lineage. The breed has been raised true to type for many centuries. Though instantly recognisable by its rich red coat, colours varied at one time, with red and white a common favourite until the 20th century. Today the Irish Setter is the best known of all the Setter family and widely recognised throughout the UK and the USA.

If you are thinking of getting an Irish Setter be aware that they need a lot of exercise. They are affectionate and at times boisterous and need training to curb the worse excesses of their enthusiasm for life. It is a gentle and elegant dog with a good temperament. Without sufficient exercise they can become scatty and a bit of a handful due to their size and energy.
