An Englishman by origin, Sir Francis Drake held the honor of being the first ever Englishman who sailed around the whole world in a period of three years starting his voyage in 1577 and ending it in 1580. The ship on which he sailed was the Pelican, which weighed 100 tons and was accompanied by four other ships and a crew of 160 men to begin an excursion to the Pacific. On his voyage, he encountered many problems like a violent storm that changed the route of his voyage, the fierce air, coercing the direction of the ship to change. After a series of violent catastrophes that made Drake lose all four of his other ships, he continued his voyage on the Pelican, which was renamed as the Golden Hind. He said through the coasts of South America, through the Strait of Magellan to places like Chile, Peru, the Californian coast, returning back to his homeland in 1780.
