Parrot is an Order of birds known in scientific classifications as Psittaciformes containing around three hundred and fifty three species and divided broadly into the two families of Psittacidae or true parrots and Cacatuidae or cockatoos. Parrot can also be used to refer to a person who mimics or imitates the actions or words of another. This sort of imitation is devoid of understanding. The concept of being a parrot is also used when a student tries to mug up or remember his studies by heart for an imminent examination.

The word "Parrot" is believed to be taken from the French dialectal "Perrot" derived from the French name "Pierre" meaning Peter.

The bird species belonging to the Order of Parrots are generally characterised by a short hooked bill, plumage that is brightly coloured and in certain species they have the capability or ability to mimic human sounds and speech.
