The first thing is to be calm as panic robs the brain of cunning. Most species of snake are not poisonous. You will need to call animal control or the emergency services to come and take the snake away.
Do not try and handle the snake yourself and try not to corner or confront them. Snakes are scared of humans and prefer to run away when given the opportunity. Like most animals they only confront if they feel threatened. There are certain precautionary steps you can take that can prevent making your home garden into a zoo. Tall grass should be avoided and all clutter should be removed. Snakes love these convenient hiding spaces. Snakes do not like socializing with humans, the reason they are probably there is that you have inadvertently provided them with a food source in the form of pests that inhabit your home.
