What Does Ilium Mean?

Ilium is a noun and is the name given to the widest and uppermost of the three bones that together constitute either of the lateral pelvic halves. It refers to the top part of the pelvis's bony structure and forms the receptacle at the hip joint for the head of the femur. The word ilium comes from the Latin word "ilium" meaning flank or groin.

Ilium also refers to an ancient city located in Asia Minor. The Trojan War took place at the site of the city. As such the city was better known as Troy. It was where the Trojan horse was used to breach the walls of Troy from within.

The lowest region of the small intestine which lies beyond the jejunum and duodenum but just before the large intestine is called ileum and is different from Ilium.
