What Was The Treaty Of Tordesillas?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Treat of Tordesillas was a decision made on behalf of the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church that divided the Altantic ocean into two parts, the eastern segment of which was assigned to Portugal and the western segment of which was granted to Spain.  According to this very treaty, Spain would be eligible to rule all the eastern lands to the line of division while Portugal held the right to rule all the lands to the western side of the line of division.

Both of the nations signed this treaty in 1494.  This treaty was actually drawn up in the light of the constant expostulations and arguments that used to take place between Portugal and Spain, each of whom was more determined to explore and conquer a larger number of colonies so as to increase their power base and emerge out as a higher power in the whole of Europe.
