What Is The Purpose Of Partitioning Your Hard Drive?

I have an 80 GB hard drive and it is partition with the C drive being 20 GB. I do computer graphics and I use programs that take up a lot of space. Now I am receiving messages that my C drive is full and it is running SLOOOW. I take the files off quick as I can. What can I do to try to fix this problem? My computer is a Sony VAIO. I bought it about 2 years ago.

When I portioned my hard drive it was so that I could have my programs on 1 drive and my documents/work on another drive. The idea was that if the drive where my programs ever crashed, I would still have access to my work/documents, etc.

Just as you place different books in different shelves, the same thing apply for partitioning of hard disk. One most important thing is that C drive always takes your operating system and once operating system gets corrupt, you have to format it and all your data is lost. So it's better to have more than one partition to keep your data safe.

So is it possible to repartition the C drive with a bigger space, say like 30 or 40 instead of just 20? How can this be done?
