What Does Atonement Mean?

Atonement may refer to compensation for a wrong or may be used in the sense of expiation as the action of atoning for sin or for wrongdoing (particularly appeasing a deity).

The atonement is also a doctrine that is prevalent within Christianity and Judaism. It deals with the manner in which sin is forgiven by God. In Christian theology, atonement describes the pardoning of sin via the crucifixion of Jesus Christ which led to the reconciliation of the relationship with God. Atonement in Judaism too refers to the process of pardoning a transgression. The concept of atonement revolves around forgiveness and restoration, based on God's mercy and is the central idea of Christianity.

There is a 'governmental view of the atonement' which is also called the ethical management theory. It is a doctrine in Christian theology relating to the meaning as well as the effect of Christ's death which has been conventionally taught in Arminian circles.
