When Did The American Government Introduce Indian Reservations?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The concept of reservations started to seem important when Americans began to use force to take land away from the Native Americans who had been the original inhabitants. The United States Congress in 1851 then passed an act called the Indian Appropriations Act which allowed for the creation of Indian reservations in what is now called Oklahoma. The reservations came under the lens and gained even more importance under Ulysses Grant during the late 1860s to put an end to the rising number of conflicts between the American and the natives. This was then followed by something called a Peace Policy that allowed for the relocation of tries to lands that were meant specifically for them with law makers and figures of authority who could merge well with their way of life, norms and values.
