The European Union will not be accepting any new member states for the remainder of this decade. This is largely due to the failure of the EU to accept a constitution, as well as the unpopularity of further expansion among most European voters.
The EU completed its largest accession of member states in 2004, when 10 new countries joined the EU (primarily from Central Europe) thus bringing the number of states up to 25. Then on January 1, 2007, the EU accepted Romania and Bulgaria, thus expanding into the Balkans.
A number of countries may eventually be able to join the EU, but this is not likely to happen before 2010. These countries include Croatia, possibly Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro and maybe even Turkey. European politicians, however, are deeply divided on whether to offer membership to Turkey. The US supports EU membership for Turkey, primarily because it sees it as a democratic, moderate Muslim country.
