Elizabeth was an artist's model, poet, and an artist herself. She lived in the pre-Raphaelite era. She is a person who has been painted and drawn extensively during that period. She personified and influenced the idea of femininity and ideal womanhood among the artists of the pre Raphaelite brotherhood. She is also known as Dante Gabriel Rossetti's muse.

Most of her early paintings on women are her portraits. She was also married to Dante and had a stillborn child. Thus she was a central figure in his life. Encouraged by him she also began to draw in water colours. They were extremely naïve but had a remarkable intensity in them. She was also described as Ophelia in Milais's famous depiction in 1851.
