It is completely normal for cats to scratch things as it is their way of marking their territory. The behaviour is learned from an early age when they are with their mother and they also have to keep their claws down. However, this doesn't mean that you have to put up with your cat scratching your furniture all the time!

There are scratching posts you can buy which attract cats to scratch them instead of your furniture. They aren't usually that expensive and most owners find that they work pretty well. However, if your cat still isn't taking the hint there are a couple of things you can try. Many owners find that a spray bottle works really well. All you do is fill a spray bottle up with cold water and each time you catch your cat scratching anything that they aren't supposed to, give them a quick squirt from the bottle. This should quickly stop the behaviour. Also cats generally do not like citrus smells so you could rub any form of citrus over the places you do not want your cat to go.
