Hypertonic solution is the solution which has high concentration of solute as compare to another solution. When a cell is put in a hypertonic solution then the solution will have high concentration of solute relative to the cytoplasm of the cell. As a result, the cell will shrink because the water will diffuse out of the cell because of the concentration gradient. This is an example of osmosis because movement of water molecules is taking place across a membrane.
