When Were Zippo Lighters First Introduced?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Zippo lighters were founded by George G Blaisdell in the year 1932. The first ever Zippo lighter was produced in the year 1933. He built the Zippo lighter after being inspired by an Australian cigarette lighter of the related design. On the 3rd of March, 1936, Zippo lighters were patented. Its patent number was 2032695.

Since the year of its making and distribution (1933) around 400,500,000 Zippo lighters have been produced and shipped. Although the design and style of Zippo lighters have changed over the years the basic working mechanism of the lighter has still remained the same.

Zippo Lighters are characteristically made of metal, they are rectangular in shape and have hinged top. The beauty of Zippo lighters is that each and every part in the lighter is replaceable. Zippo lighters were so famous that during the time of the Vietnam War any boat equipped with a flamethrower was known as 'Zippo Boats'.
