The first space flight was made by Yuri Gagarin in 1961, lasing for 89 minutes. Russia and America then both embarked on a series of missions to explore the moon and immediate space, but to outdo each other.

On July 21 1969, Neil Armstrong, an American, was the first man to walk on the moon. This first mission lasted for 21.5 hours. The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova, who was Russian – her flight in 1963 lasted three days. The first spacewalk was made by the Russian Aleksei Leonov in 1965, but he was tethered to his spacecraft by a line. The first independent excursion came much later in 1984 when American Bruce McCandless was in space not tethered to any craft.

Astronauts have to undergo extensive training and are carefully chosen before they can go into space. Many who have wanted to go, have been unable to go and some, notably the crew of the Challenger Space Shuttle, have died in the attempt.
