This Question is Answered

I Have A 5-gallon Tank, How Many Adult Eastern Newts Will I Be Able To House?

It has a secure, well-ventilated lid with a small plastic hole that you can open and close. Also, could you list a few cheap foods to feed it and will I need a filter if I change 25%-35% of the water in the tank each week? (I have enough plants, rocks, and gravel that a newt will not be able to swallow, I also will provide hiding places, and a floating island that is easily accessible. We have a well with dechlorinated water and I doubt there is ammonia in it. Thank you for looking and possibly answering!

They do not need much space.  Like most reptiles and amphibians, you can have them literally piled on top of each other and they will hardly mind at all.  I doubt you will likely have so many that there will be any problems.  You could easily keep a good 50 or so in a tank that size.

They will eat small insects, grub worms, fish food flakes, and pet stores also sell a lizard meal which has nutrients which they supposedly need to stay healthy.  They will also eat tiny fish, such as neons or guppies.

Be aware, Salamanders prefer darkness and dampness... They usually do not bask in the sunlight like many other types of lizards.  They are nocturnal and so will be most active in the dark... or under a black-light which they cannot see.  Their skin must not dry out, as they do part of their breathing thru the skin.

Salamanders are cool little pets, I had a couple of them when I was a kid and really enjoyed them.  I later turned them loose in our basement, where they thrived and I would see them down there all the time going about their business.
