You just push the needle through the fabric. Just be careful not to puncture the hole to close to edge as the terry cloth will unravel. If the edges are binded you won't have to worry.
If the towel is thick and your needle is big you may want to try to make a hole with the point of scissors first.
Mark your holes with a disappering ink pen or any pen will work as long as you don't make your dots too big so it won't show once you crochet.
