In 1989, another Batman film was released, which was directed by Tim Burton and starred Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as The Joker.
A number of sequels followed the 1989 version, and Tim Burton went on to direct Batman Returns, which was the final Batman film that he directed and also the final one with Michael Keaton as Batman.
Batman Forever was the next film, and was released in 1996, with Val Kilmer replacing Michael Keaton as Batman. Batman and Robin followed in 1997, and the most recent Batman film is Batman Begins, which was released in 2005.
The 1989 Batman film did extremely well at the box office, and became the fifth highest grossing film of all time. It was also the first UK film to be given a 12 certificate. It is also remembered for its teaser trailer, which became extremely popular, with people buying tickets for other films just so they could see the trailer.
