Colonialism is a term which refers to the settlement of colonies and migrate there as inhabitants. This phenomenon was exhibited by the big powers of the world in 18th century.Tracing about the colonialism,we see that whenever a nation builds an empire ,it tries to strengthen itself by creating its colonies. This was done to obtained the maximum benefit in terms of imports and exports from these colonies. The other side of it was to show the strength of that country. In short ,the maximum the colonies of a nation, the greater was its strength.
For example.Britain once had her colonies in America and India, till they got independent in 1776 and 1947 respectively. As English became the naval power ,they gained control of the weaker areas and defeated other nations such as French and Dutch, who also sought to have control of these areas. At the dawn of Second World War,Germany under Adolf Hitler sought to do the same and denounced the Treaty of Versailles which restricted Germany in its size and army.At the end of Second World War, the United Nations Organization was established whose charter put brakes to this practise by assuring all member countries ,their sovereignty in 1945.

It is the extension of a nation's sovereignty over territory by the establishment beyond its borders. It may be either settler colonies or administrative dependencies in which they ruled indigenous populations directly or displaced. Colonising nations normally dominate the resources of the colonial territory. They may also try to impose social, cultural and religious structures on the conquered areas. Colonialism is often used interchangeably with imperialism. We can also define imperialism as, making slaves of the poor nations. Some times it is used more broadly as it covers control exercised informally as well as formal military control.
We may also call the term colonialism to refer to a set of beliefs that are used for the promotion of this system. Often it was based on ethnocentric belief that the morals and values of colonizer were superior and more valuable as compare to colonize. We can't imagine that how false and lonely life a colonialist leaves in a foreign colony. It also means gaining of political and trade advantages over poorer nations by a powerful country which rules them.

Colonialism is the control of one nation by "transplanted" people of another nation- often a geographically distant nation that has a different culture and dominant racial or ethnic group. Colonialism occurred due to overpopulation; lack of resources: Food, land, etc.; lack of wealth; and for a sbetter opportunity or quality of life. A new form of colonialism is called neo-colonialism. This control is economic and cultural, rather than political.
