When Do I Replace My Computer Battery?

My Dell Dimension 2400 XL is over 5 years old and I'm told I should replace the battery . If I take the battery out to replace it do I lose any information or programs? What will I have to replace or re-install?

Basically the battery of computer is very small and it is directly attached with the motherboard. Sometimes it needs to be replaced and it is not very tough because battery is put in some sort of holder. Now the information that is there in hard disk cannot be lost if you replace it. The battery keeps power to a small chip that holds some basic information that the computer uses when it starts up. When the battery dies, you will normally get an alert that the date is set to some very early year or you will notice that the time is not correct when you first start up your computer.

You will not loose any vital information or any of the data on your hard drive. You can usually get the battery at your local electronics store ( Best Buy, Fry's, RadioShack or Circuit City ) or a local computer store. If needed, someone at your local computer store could probably replace your old battery for you if you don't feel comfortable doing so yourself.
