 Leicester is a very large city located in the East Midlands of England. It is also the traditional county town of Leicestershire. The town was granted the status of self governing authority in the year 1997. It is situated on the edge of the English National Forest near the River Soar. The estimated population of the city is around 295,300. With regard to population Leicester is ranked as the 10th largest city in England and the 13th largest city in the United Kingdom. It is also ranked at number 97 in Europe. The city of Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England; it was founded by the Romans.

The city is a major hub for arts and culture in England. It hosts the yearly Pride Parade also known as the Leicester Pride. It also hosts the Caribbean carnival, which is the largest carnival in the United Kingdom apart from the one in London. It also has the second largest Diwali celebrations outside India.
