If you are referring to the occupation, a mason is a worker who builds
using bricks or stone. If you are referring to the organization, it is the world's oldest and largest fraternal organization. Because of the secrecy surrounding the their rites and rituals, the organization has often been portrayed as a secret society responsible for all sorts of conspiracies and mysterious goings on. Many famous individuals including our founding fathers, US presidents, distinguished businessmen, etc have been memebers. You can't find any country that doesn't have a Masonic lodge. Heck, my grandfather was a Mason.
The Masons is a world-wide organization that promotes the idea that every man, woman and child has something to contribute to make things easier and better for the world. They suppoort many charities and vast projects mostly for the benefit of non-Masons. They spend over a million dollars a day in the US alone to support those charities and causes like the Crippled Childrens' Hospitals and Burns Institutes.

Interestingly I searched the web looking for "Mason" thinking "One whose occupation is to build with stone or brick; also, one who prepares stone for building purposes". I searched for "What is a mason" and the first eight pages were about Masons who belong to a masonic lodge. Not sure what masons would do in a coal mine unless there was stone to be removed before getting at the coal.
