Snake and ladder was introduced by Indians and is based on ethics called Vaikuntapaali or Paramapada Sopanam. In the past this game was known as Moksha Patamu and later on it was named as Leela. This games was introduced by an Indian teacher who teaches good and bad deeds. The Ladder represents the prize of doing good deed like generosity, speaking truth, faith etc. Whereas, Snakes represents the punishments for doing bad deeds like murder, theft, calling bad names and so on. In the game Ladders are less than snakes showing that the good path is difficult to follow as compared to doing bad deeds.
