What Are The Role Of Platelets In Lung Function?

Answer Question

I just looked in my hematology text book in the platelet chapter, and nowhere in that chapter does it mention a connection of platelets to lung function. Platelet function is solely to return integrity to the vascular system when it has been injured. Basically, all platelets do is stop bleeding by forming a clot at the site of a cut. Lung function IS connected with red blood cells though. Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. If the red blood cells are lacking in iron, then their oxygen-carrying capacity is reduced. When the blood circulates, it enters the heart through the veins, is sent to the lungs to be oxygenated, returns to the heart rich in oxygen, then is circulated through the body in the arteries, depositing the oxygen in  the capillary beds, and exits as deoxygenated blood, at that point the arteries become veins. The blood travels through the veins back to the heart to be sent to the lungs again to pick up more oxygen.
