How Do I Know When My Dog Is In Labour?

I have a boxer/Shepard mix and according to the vet she is due 8/7/08. Her breathing is a little labored. I have a well padded and insulated box for her that she is laying in now. She has not been moving around much here lately, and just seems to be laying up a whole lot. I assume this is normal because lord knows if I was pregnant I would want to sleep too!

The first stage of labor lasts about 12 hours and ends with the entry of the first puppy into the birth canal.  During stage 1 dogs will become restless, pace, vocalize, vomit, shiver, stop eating, and start nesting.  If you have any concerns that your dog is having difficulty giving birth have her examined by a veterinarian immediately.  Signs of problems include failure to produce a puppy after 30 minutes of persistent, intense contractions, more than 2 hours between puppies, and failure to deliver for 24 hours after the mom's body temperature drops below 99 degrees Fahrenheit.
