New York City, Manhattan Island, has a particularly high standard of sea food cuisine, but for sushi you will find many wonderful treats. There are two places that I believe have really excellent sushi.
The first is the Lobster Place, which is a seafood shop in Chelsea Market in Chelsea. They cut, prepare, serve and sell the sushi right in front of you and unless they are busy with a large order, they will make your favourite sushi pieces to order. The Rainbow selection is particularly special and whilst the customer service of the chefs is extremely limited, the rest of the staff are very friendly and competent.
Just across the road is the fabulous Maritime Hotel (very posh but we had a cockroach issue). Underneath the Hotel is an exquisite underground cavern, a traditional Japanese restaurant called Matsuri. It's a wonderful place, with a very wide selection, friendly informed staff and fresh ingredients from Japan on a daily basis. The Saki is also to die for, the menu is longer than most other restaurant wine lists. A meal will set you back a tidy sum but you won't regret it, try the Cherry Blossom cocktail.
