People who had noticable characteristics or attributes might have been very tall, strong, brave, cowardly, thin, fat, stout, greedy, wise to name but a few.

Many Welsh names describe a whole range of these characteristics. A distant ancestor may have been known in their time for a particular characteristic, long forgotten but reflected in the family surname.
    Some examples are :-
Anwyl/Anwell/Anwill meaning annwyl - beloved or dear.
Bach, Batch Baugh means bach or little and is usually used as a term of endearment.
Brace is from the Welsh bras for fat.
Catharn or Gadarn is from cadarn or gadarn for strong.
Dee is a form of du signifying black hair or dark complextion.
Gethin is taken from cethin or gethin meaning ugly or swarthy.
Haggar is from hagr or ugly.
Gwyn or Wynne is fron gwyn or wyn meaning fair or white complexion or hair.
There are many more examples to be found.
