How Do You Use Mitre Crown Molding?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

You need to use a deep mitre box and a fine-toothed saw to make a cut that shows the molding profile.  You should keep the molding in such a position that it is upside down in the mitre box.  The part of the molding that should go adjacent to the ceiling is to be on the base of the mitre box. The bottom of the crown will have the longest border for inside corners. If you cut the mitre properly, you will be able to procure the profile of the molding. Next cut away the surfeit wood along the backside of the molding following that profile line with the aid of a coping saw.

Take a utility knife and remove any extra material that is missed with the help of a coping saw. You should remember not to cut into the uncovered face of the molding. You may have to do extra carving, fitting and trimming to get the best fitting joint. Bear in mind to make the model in which one end of each piece of crown molding is always cut straight and one end is mitred. Where the pieces intercept, cut the ends at 45 degrees to make them overlap.
