Depends, really.

But basically, an investment happens when you either acquire or give something in the hopes that it will have an even greater value in the future.

This applies to a lot of things.You may acquire/purchase a home, hoping that if the real estate market is favourable in ten years down the road, you can sell it for a profit.

You can give money to an investment advisor, hoping that by their putting that money to work in a mutual fund, stocks or bonds (various types of investments called investment 'vehicles'), they can make you even more money.

You can 'invest' in a college education, giving your time, effort and money(tuition fees), in hopes of gaining a degree that will allow for a better, higher paying job.

There are many other examples, but basically you are starting off with a certain item of value, and trying to get it to increase in value.
