It's mandatory to have to clean the carpet in a rental if it's written into your lease contract. Most times the lease will state that before you leave, you have to show that you had the carpet cleaned professionally. If you don't have to do this (it isn't in the lease), a lot of times people will use a foam carpet cleaner (from a can), so they don't get charged for damaging the carpet after they leave.
