How Do I Care For My Framed Artwork?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A lot of people don't realize that there is a little bit of care involved in keeping paintings and artwork in good shape.

You should inspect your framed artwork occasionally to be sure that it isn't being damaged by its environment. If you notice stains or other deterioration you should consider what is contributing.

A common cause of damage to paintings is condensation.  Try to avoid hanging the artwork in a bathroom or kitchen where steam, moisture or grease can cause discoloration.

Also, hanging a painting over a radiator or a fireplace without a protective mantle can damage artwork.

Light is also a culprit. Directing bright light on a work can fade it.  Direct sunlight will also cause colours to become more pale.

When you clean the glass on an artwork, use a gentle cleaner.  Don't spray directly on to the glass but put a little on a cloth to dust.
