What Does Bimetallic Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Bimetallic, by the very term, denotes bi (two) - metal; i.e. the combination of two metals. It can essentially mean a metal made out of the coming together of two metals or two alloys. Thus, a bimetallic substance is composed of two parts, of which one belongs to one metal or alloy and the other consists of another metal or alloy. The bimetallic substances that are commonly used are bimetallic wires, bimetallic sheets, bimetallic thermometer, and bimetallic strips and so on.

The working of a thermostat is based on the functioning of a bimetallic strip. The bimetallic strip bends or unbends depending on the temperature-change in the room. When the room becomes very cold, the strip closes the electric circuit to start the furnace, and when the room is warm enough, the strip disconnects the circuit and shuts the furnace. This is one of the uses of a bimetallic item.
