Changing a switch that was previously wired wrong by some one else , it only was working 2 speeds and no off position

Well the speeds on the switch usually run 1 2 3 with a wire slightly apart from the rest. The wires 123 are the speed controls. If you hook up the 123 backwards it will go high med slow instead of slow med high so it really does not matter as long as you have the third wire right(Which it is if you have a running fan). :)
