A cat can stay pregnant for a maximum period of nine weeks. Cats are known to be seasonally polyestrous; this means that they have many periods of heats over the duration of a year. A heat period of a cat can last up to 4 to 7 days if the female is bred, however the heat period can last longer if the female cat is not bred.

Female cats are not impregnated by the first mate with whom they mate. Due to these reasons female cats often mate more than one male; because of this the kittens in a Litter may have different fathers. This tendency cats is known as 'Superfecund'. Female cats normally reach sexual maturity within in 4 to 10 months and male cats reach the same within 5 to 7 months.
