The NASW (National Association of Social Workers)'s code of ethics outlines the responsibilities of social workers, providing a model for professional conduct. They give a detailed explanation of how social workers are to interact with clients, with each other and how services should be rendered and unethical behaviour regulated. Their primary value is service, as well as the obligation to provide services on a voluntary basis if the situation warrants it. Another is social justice, wherein a worker should attempt to alter imbalances and criminal behaviour and abuse. Others include a belief in the dignity and worth of individuals, the importance of human relationships, integrity and competence. The ethics code also proposes the standards of practice, such as consent, social diversity, privacy and the need to avoid sexual relationships with clients. It also sets out the terms of payment, where a payment may be defaulted, as well as professional responsibilities within social work organizations.
