Is There Something Besides Insulin I Can Use With My Dog For Diabetes?

She, a miniature pincher, drinks a lot, pees a lot, eyes cloudy, lost a lot of weight; has lost about a pound a day since Jan. She is 8 years old. She is suppose to have insulin. I cannot afford to take her in each time and pay for a visit, shot and more tests. Is there something besides insulin? It is type 1 diabetes.

No there is no alternative. Diabetes is caused when the pancreas stops producing insulin, so you have to give it to the dog instead. Without it the dog will fall ill very quickly and probably die. If you cant afford to buy this every month you may have to consider taking her to a shelter.

      Hi miner,

I am sorry to hear that your little girl has diabetes.

Have you purchased the insulin from your vet, or is it something you can pick up at your local pharmacy?  If so, you need a written prescription for both the insulin and the syringes and the vet can show you how to give her the shots yourself.  The testing is only to show the stability of her sugar while she is on the medication so you will know if the insulin and the dose given are correct.

For the test she will need insulin in the morning, then wait a specified time (usually 8 hours), then going to the vet for her blood test.  This is only until the vet knows that she is stable; testing should then be only a few times a year.

Check with your vet to see if any discounts are available or if you can work out a payment program.  If neither of these options are open to you, you might want to call your local animal shelter to see if they offer discounted veterinary services.

Good luck.  I will keep you both in my prayers.  Please let me know how it goes for you two.

You do not need a prescription to purchase insulin you can buy it at any pharmacy or over the internet in Canada (a bit cheaper) you do need a prescription for needles due to the human illegal drug usage. Blood sugar needs to be checked often you can use glucose sticks to check urine but this gives you a reading after the fact. It tells you what the dogs blood sugar was 6-8 hours ago. You can also do blood sugar but that includes pricking the ear or the paw 2 times a week or so, Painful to the dog after a while.

Praying has proven over time to do little if anything for the dog but a lot for the dog owner depending on the owner's state of mind. Science is what helps with certainty and that translates into the availability and dispensing of insulin to your dog.
