Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Scunthorpe United Football Club was founded in 1899, but originally started out as Scunthorpe and Lindsey United. They were known as several different names before they finally settled on Scunthorpe United.

Scunthorpe United started playing it's home games at the ground of the Old Showground which was built in 1867. They remained here until 1988 when the club moved to the newly built Glanford Park.

The club joined the Football League in 1950 and got to the 4th round of the FA Cup against Portsmouth in 1954. This occasion would mark the club's highest-ever attendance record of 23,935 spectators.

In recent times, the club was nearly relegated from League Two to the Conference in the 2003/04 season. It survived and had an outstanding season which saw it gain promotion to League One after the 2004/05 season. The club has managed to stay in League One and finished in a respectable position of 12th place in the 2005/06 table.
