What Do You Tell A Close Family Member Who Is In Jail?

Answer Question

I don't have enough information to give a fair answer so my answer will be basic generic, let the person know your feelings or the families feelings have not changed and he/she/they are still loved, let them know they are not a bad person just made some bad choices and when this is over you hope they can put this behind them and be the person God would like for them to be,when something happens to one it affects us all,we may have our freedom but we don't have that mental freedom our thoughts are always on you and how this could happen to a nice person such as yourself. Please take this as a lesson and begin to turn things around. Give this incident a lot of thought as you read this. We will be praying for you and for changes to surround you. Hope this helps in some small way..

Well, I would think that it depends on what they are in jail for. There are many things that you can talk to them about. I would start with the cliche, this is a message from upstairs that you need to think about which way your life is going to go from here on out. Then you might want to talk about how to straighten the life up or how to avoid that situation again in the future. So many ways that you can talk and teach in this condition. Hope this helps, good luck to you.

Having been in jail myself 12 years ago (I was in for 2 years) the worst thing anyone can do is ignore them.  I never got letters, no one would accept phone calls, etc.  I was in jail for forgery not killing someone (I had been on anti-depressants which I found out caused me to act out and have blackouts - this occurred during that time frame).  I was very hard to be alone with no family support as jail/prison is a scary and depressing place.  Not having anyone being there for you makes it even worse.  You may not love what the person did, but do you still love that person?

You already have your best 2 answers but I will comment anyway as I have a brother in prison in Dade County, Florida.
I told him to enjoy his vacation, he earned it.
