Can I Drink Alcohol And Still Breastfeeding?

I want to breastfeed my baby for at least 6 months. I would like to know if I decide to go out and have a few drinks would it still effect my baby if I wait for about 6hrs after my drinks then breastfeed my baby will the alcohol still be in my system and would it have any effect on my baby. Of course I would have pumped my breast milk so my baby can eat while I would be out.

I don't think you should. It really doesn't seem healthy.

How long alcohol stays in your system depends on how much you drink. Obviously if you don't want to take the risk of giving your baby alcohol via your milk, its best not to drink any at all. Its only for 6 months!

Can you? Yes.  Should you?  That depends.  Anything you drink goes into the baby.  Preferences, tastes, habits, etc., can be acquired early, as can allergies, but that's a different issue.

If the only uncontaminated fluids available were wine and/or beer, then it would be reasonable to drink alcohol, that's basic.  That's also history.  That was then, this is now.

Breast-feeding lore indicates that a *small* quantity of alcohol can be helpful for the mother to relax her so the milk will "let down".  It *also* goes through to the baby, sedating it, which also helps the mother relax.  There's a circular effect there.

Over-sedating the baby can be dangerous for the baby.  Over-sedating the mother can cause her to be less alert in the nursing process.

Mom taking a sip of wine with Holy Communion is not cause keep the baby away for six hours.

        Be thoughtful and sensible.

I have to agree with Hibrida.  Yes you can, but the real question is...should you?  It's a fact that alcohol does pass into breast milk and more than two glasses daily is not healthy for you or your baby.

No you can't because you can damage your unborn and yourself.

I drank alcohol and my baby is 9 months old. I stopped breastfeeding for 2 days and now im feeding her again. Everything is fine, as long as you're not toxicated and feeding your baby everything should be fine.
