Hamsters are rodents quite similar to mice and rats. An adult hamster is about 5-inches long and weighs nearly 4 ounces. They are often used in laboratory because they get many of the diseases which afflict human-beings.

Hamsters live all by their selves or alone in the wild. The hamster is a proud animal and likes to mark its territory as its own. No wonder, you will have to buy a separate cage if you are buying more than one as pets. Hamster living together can fight and bite each other in a bid to claim territory and their right to food. In the wild they eat many kinds of grain, seeds, and plant material. Quite fascinatingly, in the wild, the male and female hamsters come together only during the mating season. After mating, the babies are born in 14-16 days. The female hamster becomes very aggressive when she has a litter of babies. In fact the mother can even harm her babies when aggravated. If you want to take the hamster from the wild and tame it, the best period to do so is when it is three or four weeks old.
